There is evidence
of Tartaran dogs dating as far back as 2500 B.R. in the
mountains around Sharr and Koal. Folklore and oral history
only briefly mentions them before that time and it is
believed that around this time is when they became domesticated.
Tartaran Hounds are only known to reside in the warmer
climates of the Realm of Flame. They are only seen outside
of the realm when being used for tracking or hunting by
denizens of the flame. It is believed that before their
domestication they rampaged in wild packs killing all
they crossed. It is not uncommon to hear about a hound
or a pack of hounds tracking for miles and miles sometimes
spanning weeks, until they catch their prey. They are
some of the most relentless hunters in all of Aegis and
have been known to pass up on food while tracking a different
potential meal. It is a bit of a mystery why they do this,
it seems in many cases these hounds would rather starve
to death trying to catch up with a previously selected
target, rather than take an easier meal along the way.
In a sense it could be said they have a very one-track
mind. Since their domestication this trait has not been
bred out of them nor have their chaotic and wild nature.
They are often used by wizards or shamans as servants
to complete tasks in a shorter time span. They are sometime
used to find missing people, to hunt down criminals, or
to carry messages over long distances with great haste.
They do not listen well to people or vocal commands however,
and often have to be controlled via magic.
The pack has an alpha dog (it seems to be random whether
it is male or female) who has proven itself by killing
the previous alpha. The entire pack will follow this dog
relentlessly unless they think they have a chance at being
the next alpha, in which a bloody fight ensues and only
one is left behind alive. It is not uncommon for both
to die during the fight.
Their life span is roughly 20 years but they rarely survive
longer than 8 for being killed by another dog. In a full
run it is said they can move at least twice as fast as
a common horse and some recordings state that they have
moved three or four times that speed. It is proven these
extreme high speeds can not be maintained for long periods
however. |
